Honoring Voices from the Next Generations
The Peabody Awards are all about stories that matter and often the award honors stories that give voice to the voiceless. Mea Maxima Culpa and The Cost of War: Traumatic Brain Injury; Coming Home a Different Person are just two among many.
But other stories it honors are those that give young people an opportunity to speak for themselves. Young adults have ample representation in the media, but often depictions of them come from older adults’ memories and experiences of that time in their life. However, some programs provide a platform for young adults to speak about topics important to them and provide perspectives on their own generation. These shows add a more realistic and timely component to the modern media as they allow young adults to represent themselves. Throughout the history of the Peabody Awards, the board of jurors has recognized programs that showcase a younger perspective.
