Annie Cheng Accepting the 2009 Peabody Award for “Sichuan Earthquake: One Year On”

For Now-Broadband TV, following up the deadly 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province, China, was a profound commitment. Although the Chinese government denied responsibility for any feature of the earthquake, some citizens in the region argued otherwise, among them parents of children killed in the terrible events of May 12. A central conclusion in this report is that many recently built school buildings were constructed with substandard materials. Had the schools been built as required, had contractors and officials not engaged in corrupt practices, hundreds of children might still be alive.

Overture to Friendship: The Philadelphia Orchestra in China

Featuring famed conductor Eugene Ormandy, the symphony provided an exceptional musical odyssey to the People’s Republic of China for viewers in Philadelphia. A rare feature was the rendition of the “Yellow River Concerto” and “Sanpei,” the peasants and workers march by China’s Central Philharmonic Orchestra. Delightful sidelights and human interest glimpses showing the intermingling of orchestra members with a diversity of Chinese citizenry added both color and charm.

“Hooligan Sparrow”

First-time filmmaker Nanfu Wang visited the country in 2013 to follow the story of Ye Haiyan, aka @Hooligan_Sparrow, and a small group of women’s rights activists protesting the state of sexual assault crises in schools, specifically a case of six girls who were raped by their principal in Hainan, #China. Wang captures the story by using hidden cameras and, with the activists, places herself in danger, often being harassed by government thugs.

Beyond the Great Wall: Journey to the End of China | Peabody Award Winner 1982

Seeking to understand one’s next-door neighbors is difficult, but seeking to understand people who live thousands of miles away, who speak a strange language, and who have even stranger customs sometimes seems beyond comprehension. One enterprising television station decided to help and, by teaming up with their corporate production company, they turned in a televised report which would get an A-plus in any academic grading system. Beyond the Great Wall: Journey to the End of China provided a close-up of China’s far western Xinjiang province. As the first American television crew allowed in that remote area, they concentrated on examining the Muslim minorities, the Kazahk mountain people, the experimental multi-ethnic schools, along with the unique music, dances, and games of the people.

The Gate of Heavenly Peace | Peabody Award Winner 1996

The early months of 1989 will forever be remembered as the “Beijing Spring,” a hope-filled, tension-charged time when students and workers occupied Tiananmen Square. The world watched China struggle with changes demanded in the name of democracy during these pivotal months. But the Chinese government actions on June 4, 1989, transmitted internationally on television, ended, at least for a time, China’s embrace of democratic principles. Most important, The Gate of Heavenly Peace chronicles the 1989 events from a Chinese point of view, providing critical needed context to the history and political attitudes shaping its development, and reflecting the drama, absurdity, heroism, and finally, the tragedy of the period.

CNN’s Coverage of China | Peabody Award Winner 1989

While news organizations around the world responded quickly to the infamous events in and around Tiananmen Square, CNN was distinguished by its extensive background reports by correspondent Mike Chinoy, which aired long in advance of the massacre. The Chinese government recognized the importance of the network by disconnecting CNN’s satellite uplink on May 20, a symbol of repression seen worldwide and an ominous foreshadow of the tragic events to follow. CNN stayed on the scene through the army assault on June 3-4, the summary arrests of student demonstrators, and the subsequent executions.
